As much an aesthete as a designer, free of the constraints imposed by tradition or by any professional past as a watchmaker, Jerome de Witt set up business in Vandoeuvres in order to breathe a sense of newness into the conservative world of timepieces.

At this year’s Baselworld, DeWitt debut the playful yet functional Academia Night Chronographe that interprets the measurement of short times in a diurnal/nocturnal mode. The Night Chronographe stands out from existing chronographs with its powerful signature Imperial Column motif and its sequential seconds counter. The watch dials are coated with white Superluminova and most surprisingly, dark, nearly black superluminova. The black dial background is accented with black luminescent matter printed on the minute track and the minutes/seconds counters

Within the 43mm Academia case, the Night Chronographe beats to a self-winding mechanical movement with power reserve of approximately 48 hours and water resistance to 50 meters. Available in a case made entirely of 18kt rose gold or in a case crafted from alternating white and rose gold combining rubber inserts, the Academia Night Chronographes are extremely limited in production.

The King legacy began in 1898 when immigrant Louis King crossed the Atlantic and established his roots in the United States. Catching the "Gold Rush" fever in 1902, Louis headed west to Salt Lake City, where he opened King & Co, a pawnshop and trading post that stocked everything from gold and diamonds to mining supplies, guns and suitcases. Here, the King family provided the miners with supplies while purchasing the precious stones and metals mined locally. Recognizing the biggest market for fine gold jewelry was on the East Coast, in 1919, Louis King again pulled up stakes to return to Philadelphia, where he opened King's Jewelers on upscale Chestnut Street, now working side-by-side with his son, Abraham. King's Jewelers featured fine diamond and gold jewelry, watches and semi-precious stones. By 1926, the father and son duo were at the helm of a store well-known up and down the Atlantic seaboard. To meet demand, the two opened a second store in Atlantic City, the country's premier vacation destination during the booming 1920s. It was here that Abe King first made his mark, featuring spectacular jewelry showcases the likes of which the City had never before seen.
