July Birthstone Spotlight: Ruby

The gemstone ruby is the red variety of the mineral Corundum (the word "ruby" is a derivative of the Latin word for "red"), which is the second hardest mineral (after Diamond). It comes in a variety of colors, and is considered a sapphire in any color except red. Rubies range in hue from an orangey red to a purplish red, but the most prized gems are a true red in color. The ruby is among the most highly prized of gems throughout history; considered to have magical powers, it was worn by many royalty as a talisman against evil. The red glow of this stone is also thought to represent an internal flame that can not be extinguished, symbolic of everlasting love.
